Construction drawings are the drawings that enable any design to be built and to work. On all projects, irrespective of whether they are going to be built by our client, we ensure that we consider construction proposals from the outset so that any design will work and comply with Building Regulations. On occasions, especially when dealing with converting buildings from one use to another, it is not possible to comply with all Regulations and it is at times as such as these that it is imperative that you have a designer who knows what rules can be relaxed or negotiated with Building Control in order to obtain approval. At times this involves improving other areas of the building to balance areas which do not meet regulations. Common times when this happens are when dealing with means of escape and thermal requirements.
Wright Associates Limited were the first practice to be invited to partner with Mendip District Council Building Control (click on the weblink below to see Mendip District Council's press release). We work with all councils, but can call on Mendip District Council Building Control for guidance and to run ideas past them. Although each Council’s respective Building Control Department carries out inspections on site during constructions within their catchments area, it is possible to use any Council to approve the plans for Building Regulations and we often have Mendip District Council undertake this task of checking and approving plans. As we are partners with Mendip Building Control this has advantages such as dealing with the same inspectors, quick turnaround times for approvals and as their offices are within walking distance of our office, we can meet to discuss plans at either their offices or our own. We have had applications approved quickly as a result of this service which means projects can commence quickly on site. We however can submit application to any authority tasked with carrying out Building Regulations checks and approvals.
